Trauma Tuesday #13

From Flash Comics #99, art by Carmine Infantino.

Disclaimer:  While reading my copy of The Black Canary Archives Volume 1, I discovered the ridiculous trend that Dinah got knocked unconscious every single issue.  Now, I've been knocked cold before, and that $#@% is really dangerous.  Kanigher and Infantino either didn't realize how unhealthy it was, or they didn't care, because Black Canary would have been reduced to a drooling vegetable by her third solo adventure.

I dedicate a regular blog update to the panels showing these injuries to spotlight the ridiculousness and repetitiveness--and laziness--of the kind of storytelling common during this era of comic book publishing.  In no conceivable way do I endorse any sort of violence against women (or men).

Out Today: Birds of Prey #20

Birds of Prey #20 hit the shelves today.  It continues the story of Mister Freeze and the Talons and Starling's betrayal and a whole bunch of stupid things I don't care about.  I don't think I can follow this book anymore.  I can't tell if Christy Marx is being force-fed this story by the editors who want to keep the Court of Owls up front or if it's her decision, but it really drags the book down to sixth rate Batman spin-off and kills any suspense.

Maybe I'll do an in-depth review this weekend, but maybe I'll just watch television.

Black Canary Schools Superman on "Right", "Smart" Things

From Vixen: Return of the Lion #2, art by Cafu.
I have a hard time believing this distinction was somehow beyond Superman's comprehension before now.  I guess this was how writer G. Willow Wilson justified Black Canary being chairperson of the Justice League during this crazy between-Crises-era for the League.

Super-Team Family: Black Canary and Black Bolt

With this past weekend's release of Iron Man 3 in theaters, I felt like dipping Black Canary's foot into the Marvel pond.  And what better way to do that than to spotlight one of the glorious DC/Marvel crossover covers created by Ross over at his Super-Team Family blog?

Below is the custom cover of Black Canary teaming up with the Inhumans king, Black Bolt…for a concert!  Terrific!

Courtesy of Super-Team Family: The Lost Issues blog.
The Dinah featured above was drawn by the wonderful Alex Toth, who contributed to the Black Canary back-up strip in Adventure Comics #418-419.

Check out Super-Team Family: The Lost Issues for many, many more DC/Marvel crossover covers!

Black Canary by Cliff Chiang

It's Whatever Wednesday--enjoy this sketch of classic Dinah by Cliff Chiang!

Cliff Chiang drew Black Canary for the first story arc of her post-wedding Green Arrow/Black Canary title and continued to do covers for that series for the first year.  He also drew one of my favorite issues of The Brave and the Bold (2007), the "Ladies Night" team-up of Wonder Woman, Zatanna and Batgirl in issue #33.

Currently, Cliff Chiang is one of the artists on DC's Wonder Woman in the New 52.
