Canary Comics for March 2014

DC released their solicitations for March 2014.  Black Canary's name only pops up in two items, so if she's guest starring in any of the Forever Evil tie-ins or the latest issue of Injustice Year 2, it's not significant enough to make the solicits.

BIRDS OF PREY #29.
Written by Christy Marx
Art by Robson Rocha and Jonathan Glapion.
Cover by Jorge Molina
On sale March 19.
32 pages. $2.99 US.

Black Canary confronts Ra's al Ghul, who makes her an offer that could save her husband! Is she willing to pay the ultimate price?

Damnit, I just want to wipe my hands of this series and be done, but the story is improving, albeit at glacial pace.  And now Christy Marx is bringing Ra's al Ghul into the mix?  This has me intrigued because of how Dinah is connected to Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins in Arrow, and how she almost married him way back in the Chuck Dixon era of Birds of Prey.  Grrr!!! I think I may have to stick with BoP after all to see where this story leads.

Also, is Robson Rocha taking over art duties full time or just for this issue?  He helped Romano Molenaar on issues #22 and #24, so he's not coming out of nowhere.

Of course, the biggest and bestest news to come out of the March solicits is for a book that's not even coming out until May...

BLACK CANARY AND ZATANNA: BLOODSPELL HC
Written by Paul Dini
Art and cover by Joe Quinones
On sale May 21
144 pages. $22.99 US.

Two of the DC Universe's brightest stars join forces in this original graphic novel!  A year ago, Black Canary infiltrated a gang of female criminals set to pull a dangerous heist at a Las Vegas casino.  Its leader was skilled in hand-to-hand combat and more than a passing interest in black magic.  Rather than be captured by Canary or the law, she went to her death, vowing to get revenge on Canary!  Now, one year later, death stalks those gang members, and Canary must turn to her friend Zatanna to help investigate.  This title also includes a special sketchbook section.

You could've knocked me over.  I had heard this was out there for a couple months.  I had seen sample pages, even the pre-order page on Amazon.com.  But somehow I didn't believe.  Couldn't believe it.  It seemed too good to be true.  An original Black Canary graphic novel: Holy crap!

And she's not partnered with Green Arrow or Batgirl or anyone else you'd expect.  It's her Fishnet Sister, the Mistress of Magic, Zatanna.  Plus, that creative team!  I first noticed Joe Quinones during Wednesday Comics where he drew the Green Lantern tale.  Great stuff, there.  And Paul Dini, who knows both of these ladies pretty well from his involvement with the DC Animated Universe, fills me with hope that this story will approach the characters from a place of love instead of cynicism.

Canary Comics for December '13

Cover by Jorge Molina.

BIRDS OF PREY #26
The Birds strike back!  Canary cuts loose against Regulus!  Condor cuts loose on Tsiklon!  Batgirl and Strix cut loose on everybody!  Will it be enough for them to escape with their lives?

Written by Christy Marx
Art by Romano Molenaar and Jonathan Glapion
On sale December 18
32 Pages
U.S. Price: 2.99

I don't even remember what this storyline is about, and since there won't be a Birds of Prey issue this month, it'll be an even longer time before we get back into it.  And then the November issue is a Batman: Zero Year tie-in.  Ugh… I think Villains Month is going to cost BoP what few readers are holding on.  I predict a new creative team or a cancelation notice by February.

Canary Comics for November '13

Cover by Jorge Molina.
BIRDS OF PREY #25
BLACK CANARY: ZERO YEAR?!  Well, it's definitely a BATMAN: ZERO YEAR tie-in issue as we look into a pivotal moment in Black Canary's history!  Don't miss assassins, mystery men and an ancient evil in Gotham City!

Written by Christy Marx
Art by Romano Molenaar and Jonathan Glapion
On sale November 20
40 Pages
U.S. Price: 3.99

I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm sick of Birds of Prey getting the sloppy seconds (or thirds, or eighths) of the Batman universe, even though "Zero Year" is clearly affecting a lot of other non-Batman books, like The Flash and Action Comics.  On the other hand, I do like the description in that write-up, so maybe it'll work out!

Cover by Alex Maleev.
BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #25
Time and time again, Clayface has proven to be one of Batman's most elusive adversaries.  On the loose once more, it's time for the Dark Knight to call in some back-up!  Guest starring Black Canary and Condor!

Written by Gregg Hurwitz
Art by Alex Maleev
On sale November 27
32 Pages
U.S. Price: 2.99

Are you kidding me?!!  Black Canary is going to appear in a Batman book drawn by ALEX MALEEV?!!  This news made my day!  I just read Hurwitz's first story arc and I like what he does with villains.  I am thrilled to see him taking on Clayface--and with Maleev, one of my favorite artists in the business--and with Black Canary guest starring!  This should be great!

Cover by Mico Suayan.
INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #11
Batman has inside information on the pill Lex Luthor's developed to build an army of super soldiers.  He knows where to get it, but it's in the most dangerous place on Earth: Superman's Fortress of Solitude.  He and his team are about to take their biggest risk yet, and tragedy lies ahead!

Written by Tom Taylor
Art by Jheremy Raapack, Mike S. Miller and Tom Derenick
On sale November 27
40 Pages
U.S. Price: 3.99

Despite my mounting hatred for the darker, bloodier DC Universe, I have really, really enjoyed the digital first Injustice comic.  And Black Canary's costume--within the context of the video game redesigns--is pretty good, much preferred to her New 52 look!

Cover by Romano Molenaar.
BIRDS OF PREY VOL. 3: A CLASH OF DAGGERS TPB
The Birds lose one member but gain another in these tales from issues #13-17 and BATGIRL ANNUAL #1, all while the team itself is pulled apart by personal demons and a traitor in their midst.

Written by Duane Swierczynski and Gail Simone
Art by Romano Molenaar, Vicente Cifuentes, Juan Jose Ryp, Daniel Sampere and Admira Wijaya
On sale December 18
160 Pages
U.S. Price: 14.99

This trade collects Swierczynski's final issues on the series.  Strix is introduced in Batgirl before joining the team to replace Katana who went on to bigger things.

Cover by John K. Snyder III.
DOCTOR MID-NITE TPB (New Printing)
The classic adventure is back in print! Dr. Pieter Cross uses his scientific genius and acquired wealth to assume the identity of vigilante Doctor Mid-Nite.  As Doctor Mid-Nite, he swears to protect the downtrodden from the vermin that prey on them.  But in order to fulfill his mission, he must take down an evil criminal triumvirate bent on profiting from the demise of his city.

Written by Matt Wagner
Art by John K. Snyder III
On sale December 11
160 Pages
U.S. Price: 14.99

This isn't a Black Canary comic, but Dinah was involved romantically with Doctor Mid-Nite for a time in the pages of JSA.  Plus, who needs an excuse to plug a book written by Matt Wagner?

Written by Christy Marx
Art by Romano Molenaar and Jonathan Glapion

32 Pages
U.S. Price: 2.99

Dinah's husband is alive?  Maybe he can tell us why she's been wanted for murder all this time.

DON'T Buy TALON #9 This Week!

This month's issue of Talon boasted a "guest starring" appearance of the Birds of Prey on its cover.  Well, sometimes advertisements lie and you can't judge a book by its cover, because no such thing happens in the book.

The Birds' resident Talon, Strix, is in the first page of Talon #9.  Batgirl is in the first panel, being kicked off a roof by the Talon Calvin Rose, which is kind of referencing events from BOP #21, but not really because that didn't happen like that.  Black Canary only appears on this issue's cover, not in the book.  None of them have any dialogue.  None of them are mentioned by name.  In fact, the characters are never mentioned directly or obliquely.  This is a regular issue of Talon--I'm assuming--with Batgirl and Black Canary put on the cover in a shameless effort to attract readers.  I wish it hadn't worked on me, but it did.

…

From Justice League of America #5, art by Brett Booth.
Where Black Canary does appear, however, is in Justice League of America #5.  It's a tiny cameo; in fact, it's only a picture of her, but Dinah is mentioned by Amanda Waller as a possible replacement member for the Justice League of America.

I would love to see Black Canary become a regular member of one of the Justice League teams.  She could use the exposure that a high profile, high-selling title would provide, and she damn well deserves it!  But if Geoff Johns didn't add her to the League during its post-Throne of Atlantis recruiting drive (see Justice League #18), I don't see her upgrading teams anytime soon.

If Dinah did join one of these teams, though, I think she'd be a better fit for the New 52 Justice League of America.  She already has a connection to Amanda Waller from her time with Team 7.  Steve Trevor's unit feels more tactical and militaristic than the larger-than-life icons that comprise the satellite-based League.  For better or worse, Dinah fits into the former category in this continuity.  She would also be an interesting matchup for Batman--better than Catwoman or Green Arrow, I think.  And it might give her a chance to meet Green Arrow, which I don't think has happened yet in the New 52.

…

Anyway, I just wanted to plug Dinah's cameo appearance in this week's JLofA and warn potential buyers to not waste money on Talon if they're expecting an actual crossover with Birds of Prey.

Out This Week: TALON #9

DC continues to try and shore up sales for Birds of Prey by tying it to the Batman universe through peripheral Batman characters like Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Mister Freeze and the Court of Owls.  Seemingly everyone but Batman.  And now BOP is crossing over with Talon.

Cover by Sepulveda

TALON #9

In the aftermath of his encounter with Strix and the Birds of Prey (continuing from this month's BIRDS OF PREY #21), Calvin is sent on his deadliest mission yet: Retrieve one man from the deadliest island on Earth, Santa Prisca, the home of Bane!

Written by James Tynion IV
Art and cover by Miguel A. Sepulveda
On sale June 26
32 Pages
U.S. Price: 2.99

From the solicit, the Birds might only appear in two pages of this issue of Talon.  However, I'm looking forward to it more than any issue of the New 52 Birds of Prey, if only because I like Tynion's writing more than that of Swierczynski or Marx.

UPDATE:  I just read the issue and… I was wrong.  The Birds of Prey appear in less than two pages.  Black Canary only appears on the cover.  Batgirl appears in one panel falling off a building.  None of them have any dialogue, nor are any of them referred to specifically or even obliquely in the script.

I'm pissed off that I paid for this $#@%!

Canary Comics for September '13

None.

September will be Villains Month for DC Comics.  Along with the launch of the "Forever Evil" event, every one of DC's occasionally-fifty-two regular series will be usurped by spotlight issues on Batman's the company's many villains.

Forever Evil promotional art (and possibly first cover) by David Finch.

There won't be an issue of Birds of Prey in September, nor will there be an issue of Animal Man, or Supergirl, or Nightwing, or any of the other middle to low-range selling books.  Instead there will be four Batman books (note that's the self-titled Batman series; there will also be four issues of Detective Comics, four of Batman & Robin, and four of Batman: The Dark Knight for a total of sixteen Caped Crusader foils to focus on).  There will be plenty of Justice League villain books, Superman villain books, Green Lantern villain books, etc.  Even Green Arrow gets subverted for Count Vertigo that month, and all two of Aquaman's rogues gallery get the star treatment in September.

Somewhere in all those villain spotlights, there may be an appearance of or reference to Black Canary and the Birds of Prey, but I doubt it.  I hope, by then, writer Christy Marx has dropped Mister Freeze and the Court of Owls and taken the Birds in her own creative direction not handed down by editorial decree.  But I doubt that, too.

Canary Comics for Wednesday, May 1, 2013

No issues of Birds of Prey or Team 7 this week, but Black Canary will be featured in Back Issue #64 from Twomorrow Publishing!

Cover art by Mike Grell... and everyone who drew the background covers...
The solicit from Previews reads:
Back Issue looks back at "Backup Series" of the Bronze Age! Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Metamorpho, Archie Goodwin and Walter Simonson's Manhunter, Martin Pasko and Keith Giffen's Dr. Fate, "Whatever Happened To…?", Nemesis, Rose and the Thorn, and the Seven Soldiers of Victory! Featuring the work of Cary Burkett, John Calnan, Dick Giordano, Mike Grell, Elliot S. Maggin, Dan Spiegle, and more!
On sale this Wednesday for $8.95 US.

I've never picked up one of these Back Issues… I mean, I've picked up lots of back issues--I do all the time--but I've never bought an issue of Back Issue.  This issue looks like it's worth me tracking down, though, not just for the obligatory Black Canary appearance.  Stories of Dr. Fate and Metamorpho, stories by Archie Goodwin, Marty Pasko, Walt Simonson… Sounds awesome to me!
